Esophageal dilatation

Esophageal dilation consists of introducing through the lumen of the esophagus, accessories made of different materials and forms as part of the treatment of stenosis. Dysphagia is the main symptom reported by patients with obstructive esophageal disease. The clinical history allows us, in the vast majority of cases, to make the diagnosis.

An endoscope is inserted into the esophagus through the mouth so the doctor can see the inside of the esophagus. Different types of special instruments are then carefully inserted through the mouth into the esophagus (to open the stenosis) and then removed.

Why do esophageal dilatation?

It should be done when patients have esophageal stenosis from different causes, which cause difficulty swallowing and cause food to get stuck in the esophagus. As a result of this “choking”, patients may present from respiratory obstructive episodes to chest pain mistaken with heart attack or malnutrition.
